Frankie Laine Benefit Concert is June 29
Mark your calendars now. We’ll let you know when the final plans are made. Ralph Stewart and his committee have been working with Frankie’s band leader, Benny Hollman (and his "Big Band Explosion") and Mike Putnam at the Poway Theater for the Performing Arts for weeks now. The net proceeds from the concert will go to RB Neighborhood Watch and Emergency Preparedness. What a nostalgic trip this will be for most of us, and we only have to go as far as Poway to enjoy it. Watch this column or check out www.RBernardo.com under the "News" heading. There is a new web page for "RB Elections 2000." You might want to check it out. All the candidates’ names and districts, as well as links to what the Councils do. Just go the www.RBernardo.com then to local news. It’s important that you vote on March 4 at your community centers. We need good, interested people on our boards, and you should at all times tell them what you think. How else to get anything you want accomplished? Thanks to the super successful July 5 Grand Drawing in Webb Park organized by Neighborhood Watch and Emergency Preparedness, many beneficial things have been accomplished for Rancho Bernardo residents. All the Community Centers have been checked for their emergency supplies; unusable items are being replaced with fresh batteries and first aid equipment; other necessaries have been purchased. The Storefront NHW/EPP office now has a new, up-to-date computer, new software, and Internet access. Thanks to Ralph Parris of Emergency Preparedness who donated a 5,000 watt motor-generator to the Swim and Tennis Club for emergency power. If any of you would be willing to donate, since all Community Centers could use power in times of emergency, call Jim Harmon, RB Director, Emergency Preparedness at 451-9550. A most successful "Catered Affair" was held last week for the 1998 and 1999 recipients of the Distinguished Service Awards, Neighborhood Watch and Emergency Preparedness, at the Eastview Community Center. Over 50 recipients and their guests enjoyed good food and camaraderie, with a surprise unveiling of a new Awards plaque. This plaque will be on permanent display in the Library for all to enjoy. A Special Agent of the U.S. Department of Justice, Rob Von Kaenel will conduct a three-session course sponsored by the Continuing Education Center on Tuesdays, February 15, 22, and 29 from 10 a.m. to noon. He is an expert on how illegal drugs are manufactured, and smuggled into the U.S. and distributed to the pushers, even in the affluent suburbs. He discusses the variety of illegal drugs available from marijuana and amphetamines to cocaine and heroin; describes the symptoms; displays paraphernalia; and explains how you can spot the telltale signs of drug abuse. All sessions will be held at the CEC Center, 16776 Bernardo Center Drive, Suite 110A. Make your reservations now: members $20, nonmembers $24. Call CEC at (858)487-0464
