Mayo Clinic: "It’s healthy to
volunteer"
The Mayo Clinic Health Letter states, "People who volunteer tend to be happier and healthier." Nearly 14 million people over age 65 do volunteer work. These people have volunteer jobs that make them feel good and useful. They find that volunteer work keeps them from being lonely and helps them interact socially with others who are interested in the same things. They are used to accomplishing things, and volunteering focuses on getting things done.At Neighborhood Watch in Rancho Bernardo, there are jobs just waiting for you in the office in the Police Storefront, 2nd floor of the library. Volunteers are needed to help with mailings, to xerox newsletters, to make phone calls, to answer the telephone, to do computer work, become block captains or area coordinators in your own communities, as well as write press releases. Perhaps you have had corporate, government, or military experience; your knowledge would be valuable to Neighborhood Watch and Emergency Preparedness. No experience needed, however. On the job training is fun. All jobs can be part time or full time; just an hour or two a week. Or as often as you wish. The gang at Neighborhood Watch and Emergency Preparedness would like to show you what they do and how you can help Rancho Bernardo keep safe and informed. You can work at the office, at your home, or within your district. It’s a win-win situation: you can help your neighbors and your community as well as work with dedicated people who you will enjoy. It’s "healthy" to volunteer. Please do - we need your help. Just an hour or two a month. That’s all. More news from RSVP: Retirement plaques were given out recently to Fran Tuchband who worked 2,252 hours with the patrol for over 5 years; Fred Resener who worked 2,489 hours for over 7 years; and P J. Skill who was in the first Academy in June, 1992 and worked 12,424 Hours. New name badges with 4 stars were given to members who graduated January 29, 1996: Lola Bellinger, Norm Gillespie, Bob Owens, Eileen Stanley, Bob Steinhauser and Office Manager Art Handell. New name badges with 1 star were given to members who graduated January 29, 1999: Virginia Alex, Jim Baker, Dean Deselms and Jack Loos. State Attorney General Bill Lockyer will make a presentation at the Continuing Education Center on Thursday, February 24 at 7:00 p.m. as part of the CEC series on California Politics. He will explain how hastily written legislation sometimes results in bad laws, and how the judiciary overturns flawed laws. Call the CEC office for more information: (858) 487-0464.
