Block Captain Appreciation Picnic slated for July 29

It’s so special - we’ll call it the First Annual. We hope that it will be a yearly happening.

What’s going on? The San Diego Police Department, Northeastern Division, under the command of Captain Harold Cox, will be throwing a terrific party for Block Captains and coordinators (and their families) from the entire NE Division - Rancho Bernardo, Diamond Gateway and Mira Mesa. All block captains, assistant block captains, and coordinators are invited. This picnic is given by the police to show their appreciation and to honor the Neighborhood Watch/Police partnership. By the way, Captain Cox will be a special barbecue chef. You can’t miss THAT!

What’s happening and where? The Carmel Mountain Ranch Community Park on Saturday, July 29 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. is the place. Great free food and refreshments, games, prizes, awards, McGruff, and the Rancho Bernardo citizens band radio operators are coming to show us how it’s done. Plenty of parking, and the directions are easy: exit off I-15 at Carmel Mountain Road, turn right on Rancho Carmel Drive (at the Olive Garden) and it’s at 10152 Rancho Carmel Drive - about a mile on the right. Directly across from Stuft Pizza. See you there. Remember to bring a chair or blanket and a big appetite. Hamburgers, hot dogs, watermelon, drinks, chips, cookies - all free while supplies last. Don’t be late! Prizes and surprises!

Awards will be given to RB Block Captains Leona des Plantes-Janis, Vincent Lane and Evelyn Dobson. An Excellence Award will be given to RB residents Marci and Dana Clark.

Don’t forget that Tuesday, August 1 is the big night for "Light up the Night" block parties. There is still time to call for your free flyers, Checklists to pass out, and all the latest information on safety and security.

Well, Oaks North is certainly the early winner-so far. Block Parties are being held in the Miradors on Plaza Acosta, Plaza Arica, Camino Ramillette, and Circulo Dardo as well as on Avenida Alozdra. A big ‘job well done’ to Oaks North. Now everyone can see why Oaks North consistently has a lower crime rate than other districts. Check out: www.rbernardo.com - RB Crime stats. Call us for information on what your block can do to improve neighborliness and safety. 538-8148. We’ll even tell you who your block captain is, or if you are missing one. We can help.

Looks like Webb Park Lake has been saved! At least for the next 5 years. The chemical compound now being used to seal the leaks seems to be working. It looks very promising after the first week; a month’s more data will determine the long-range effect. The Save the Lake Committee and the Town Center Property Association have recently met, and the Property Association has agreed to maintain the lake for the next five years. These groups will continue to meet to allocate funds and develop plans for future maintenance, David Olivet says, and the water purification efforts will be resumed. Good news for RB.
