Be extra cautious in public "danger zones"

Here are some safety precautions you can take to help protect yourself, your family and your property. Judge yourselves whether these precautions are suitable for the occasion at hand.

HAVE GOOD ELEVATOR SENSE. Don’t get in an elevator if someone in the elevator or someone waiting for the elevator makes you uneasy. There is always another one coming along.

If you notice that a person in the elevator has not pushed a floor button, don’t get off at your floor. Go back to the lobby and report the suspicious activity. This could be a case of someone waiting to see where you get off.

Stand near the control panel. If you are threatened or attacked, push the alarm button immediately. Also, push several floor buttons. The would-be attacker is less likely to succeed with the doors constantly opening.

USE THE ATM (Automated Teller Machine) WISELY. Try to use the ATM during daylight hours. If possible, take someone with you.

Park as close as you can to the ATM. It is better yet, to go to one inside a busy store or a bank. Before using the machine, make sure no one is lingering in the area.

Keep your ATM card and your deposits concealed until you get to the machine. Make sure you block others’ view as you enter your PIN (Personal ID Number.)

If you feel others are crowding you or hovering, or if the person in front of you lingers after his transaction, leave and find another ATM. When finished, put your card and money away quickly. Check to see that you are not followed. Complete your transaction and make sure you remove your card.

If you are ever forced by someone to use your ATM card for his benefit, remember, your life is more important than your money.

TAKE CARE IN THEATERS AND RESTAURANTS. Keep your purse in your lap, not on the seat next to you, on the back of the seat or on the floor. It is best to keep your valuables in a pocket or at home.

Make a note of emergency exits as soon as you arrive at your destination. This is important in the case of fire, a confrontation or any other crisis. Cary only as much cash as you need and only the credit cards you will be using. Expensive jewelry should stay at home.
