All about dogs and defibrillators in RB
Councilmember Brian Maienschein has arranged for the San Diego City Park and Recreation Staff to meet with Rancho Bernardo community residents to discuss the Off-Leash Dog Park and to voice their desires in a public forum in respect to design and possible amenities of this future Park. Maienschein declares, "We are trying to make the RB Community Park a 21st Century facility – a flagship for all new parks to come." Another Maienschein RB project: Automated External Defibrillators or (AEDs) are coming to Rancho Bernardo. These devices are a critical key to saving victims of sudden cardiac arrest. The easy-to-use features allow virtually anyone with proper training to defibrillate sudden cardiac arrest victims quickly and effectively, improving the chances of survival dramatically. These devices are about the size and weight of a standard laptop computer making it easy for anyone to carry. San Diego Project Heart Beat, a division of the San Diego City Fire Department, has been working with Councilmember Maienschein to promote this program throughout Rancho Bernardo. "My goal is to make these AED units as accessible as fire extinguishers throughout Rancho Bernardo," said Maienschein. "Each community center has been approached and offered what I call ‘a deal of a lifetime’." If your community center were to go out and purchase one of these units on their own it would cost close to $5,000.00. Since the City of San Diego has a corporate agreement with Cardiac Science, Inc. they have reduced the cost to $2350.00 per unit. In partnership with Councilmember Maienschein, the RB Community Foundation and your local community center, he has been able to reduce the cost to just under $900.00. The RB Chamber of Commerce has agreed to sponsor the training cost for 3 staff members for each center that participates in this program. Seven Oaks, Oaks North, Westwood, High Country West, Eastview, RB Swim & Tennis, and the RB Community Park have all agreed to place an AED unit in their community center. If your center is not on the list and you would like to request one be placed at your center please contact your community center manager.
