 Thieves can ruin shopping

Thieves don’t have to go shopping. They let you and me do it for them. Then they steal our purchases. It’s as simple as that.

Of course, we have to shop in the Plaza, the Mall and other large shopping centers, but we can be real smart about it. Officer Paul Lennon offers some important tips for shoppers. This is clearly good advice anytime, but during the holiday season, its importance is greatly magnified.

Shop early to avoid the rush. With fewer people, fewer cars and less stress, there is always less risk for the shopper. Shopping early in the day also lessens risk. Maybe we are more aware and more organized in the morning.

If you have to shop in the evening, make sure to take a friend along. And park only in well-lighted areas as close to store entrances as you can. Since this is sometimes impossible, take advantage of the valet parking often offered by stores at holiday time.

If you overload yourself with packages, you can be distracted and run the risk of becoming unaware of your surroundings. The best thing you can do is drop a few packages in your locked trunk, then resume shopping. Keep nothing "interesting looking" in your car; thieves have been known to break in and steal anything and everything.

You should always be aware of persons in the parking lot, especially near your car. Also check out people sitting inside parked cars, particularly if they seem interested in you and your packages. Do not hesitate to notify store security if you see any suspicious activity. And report to the police immediately if you are a victim of a crime.

Parents with children should have a plan in advance that the children can understand. The best plan, according to Officer Lennon, would be to teach your children to go to a store clerk - the person with a name tag - and ask for help if they become lost or separated from you. And to stay with that person until everyone is back together.

There’s no need to carry more cash than usual during the holidays. All stores usually accept a credit card or a personal check (with ID). Just carry the cards you’ll need. And the women should carry their purses close to the body with the flap inward. Men, remember, wallets should be in a front or inside pocket. If you must carry it in a back pocket, wrap a rubber band around it.

Every holiday season, the San Diego Police Department implements extra security details to help you shop without fear. But they need your help. Be aware of the people around you and of your surroundings. Never become distracted. Know where you are going at all times, and walk with a purpose. Happy and safe shopping to you.
