Try the police department’s crime cyber-watch.

There is a new Neighborhood e-Watch free subscription service available, provided by SDPD Crime Analysis, that will automatically alert you (via e-mail) of crime activity in any neighborhood within a one-mile radius.

This free subscription service will act as a "cyber" neighborhood watch, providing citizens with information to help reduce crime in their neighborhoods and to increase interaction between neighbors and the Police Department.

Here’s how it works: go to http://apps.sandiego.gov/ewatch/begin and "Enter Subscription Service." (You can unsubscribe at any time.) In the corresponding box to the left, enter the address or intersection that interests you (your home, child's school, etc.). You may identify up to three (3) separate addresses within the boundaries of the City of San Diego. You will need to subscribe separately for each address of interest.

Select the radius of the area of interest (the larger the area, the more E-mail alerts you are likely to receive). My advice is to start with "one mile." If you are receiving too much information that does not interest you, then change the radius. It can go down to two tenths (.2) of a mile. This is for you to decide.

Check the types of incidents you would like to be notified about (again, the more incidents you select, the more E-mail alerts you are likely to receive). Not all of us want to know about traffic citations, truancy or curfew violations!

Enter your E-mail address to receive E-mail alert(s) of requested recent incidents and corresponding maps. Then click the Preview button to review the requested location and radius and to complete your subscription. You will be shown a map that reflects your area of interest.

Give it a try and tell us at Neighborhood Watch how you like it: 538-8148.
