Coco’s Café and Bakery in Rancho Bernardo congratulates Sally Edwards in Oaks North (District C) for her job as Miradors Area Coordinator and host of a large party on August Night Out and Gene Harrison from Bernardo Heights (District F) for his help in setting up the Training Seminar and serving on the recruitment panel.  They are honored in September with a Coco’s award certificate. Every month for over eight years, Coco’s has donated meals to active Neighborhood Watch and Emergency Preparedness volunteers. Thanks go to Coco’s and Marlene Jones, General Manager, for their generosity and their pride in RB’s hard working volunteers.

 

Two parties will kick off the fall season for the Continuing Education Center, both at Remington Club Phase II, 16916 Hierba Dr. An Open House on Sept. 5 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. will feature music by the Esprit Trio, refreshments, and complimentary valet parking by the Remington Club. Tables will be set up for registration for membership, lectures and cultural events. Membership is $30 annually for individuals and $50 for couples. Todd Schultz, Director of Development for The Old Globe Theater, will be the guest speaker at an Events Preview Party on Sept. 18 at 1:30 p.m. Outings to theaters, concerts, operas and other venues, such as the Dead Sea Scrolls and Reagan Library, will be described after a light lunch. The next theater trip will be on Sept. 30 at 12:30 p.m. from Remington Club to the Lyric Opera presentation of “Man of La Mancha.” Cost for members is $57, nonmembers $62. The Rancho Bernardo Hall of Fame is seeking nominations for 2007. Each year, the Hall of Fame selects up to three individuals to honor. To qualify for selection, a person must be a living individual with six or more years of outstanding volunteer leadership that has resulted in a significant contribution to Rancho Bernardo. The leadership positions may have been as leader of an organization, committee, or project.  If a candidate has held more than one leadership position, the six years may overlap and cover fewer than six calendar years. Typical organizations in which the candidate may have served are those designed to serve others, enhance the quality of life in RB, improve health or education in RB, or foster the civic or cultural life of RB. The nomination period this year is October 1-31.  Nominations must be made on forms provided by the Hall of Fame.  These forms are available on October 1 on the Hall of Fame web site RBHallofFame.org, at the RB Library, and in each of the RB Community Centers. RB Business Association Upcoming Events

Don't miss these Rancho Bernardo Business Association events for September: September 8th is RB's 45th Birthday Party at Webb Park from 4:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. and will be catered by Cafe Merlot. It is an old-fashioned American picnic and ice cream social. Mayor Jerry Sanders will seal a time capsule and City Councilman Brian Maienschein will MC. Reservations are required and the cost is $20. Reservations must be in by September 3rd. On September 18th the RBBA is having a reception at Athens Market Cafe in Carmel Mountain Ranch from 5:30 p.m.-7:00 p.m. The reception is free to members and $5 for non-members and the first beverage is on the RBBA. The Joslyn Center of RB is now offering a six-week course of Ballroom Dance Classes for teens and for ages 30-40. The RB Sunrise Rotary will be holding its sixth annual Freedom Ride – a direct response to the tragedy of 9/11, on September 15. RB Sunrise Rotary uses the money raised at this event to sponsor groups throughout the community, and the primary beneficiary of this year’s ride will be the San Diego Armed Services YMCA. The North Central Democratic Club will hold its regular monthly meeting on Monday, September 24 at Remington Club II, 16916 Hierba Drive. In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October, Project SARAH  (Stop Abusive Relationships At Home) is hosting the Third Annual Game Day on October 25, from 11:30 am to 3:30 pm.  Over 150 people attended last year’s event and showed their support for survivors of abuse.  Proceeds from the event directly benefit Project SARAH clients in crisis.   Participants enjoy a delicious kosher luncheon and play games like Mah-Jongg, Kaluki, Bridge, and many others.  This year’s Game Day features a separate quiet area for bridge players and the option to bring your own game and team of four. The Progressive Grandmothers for Political Action will meet on September 25th at 1:00 P.M. at the Remington II located at 16925 Hierba Drive. Our speaker will be Marjorie Cohn who lectures throughout the world and provides legal and political commentary on human rights and U.S. foreign policy for CBS News, Court TV, BBC, CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, NPR, Air America, and Pacifica Radio.  She is president of the National Lawyers Guild and a professor at Thomas Jefferson School of Law.  She was named one of San Diego's top attorneys in academics for 2006.   Her latest book "Cowboy Republic" is now available. She will be happy to sign books at the meeting.  We welcome everyone regardless of age or Grandmother status.

The Chamber Music Society of North County announces a five-concert subscription series for 2007-08. The concerts are held at Lutheran Church of the Incarnation, 16889 Espola Road, in Poway, on Sunday afternoons at 2:30 p.m. Groups performing in the upcoming season include piano duo Macfarlane and Wayshner, the Felici Trio, cellist R.  The RB Swingtet will perform its next monthly swing concert at the RB Library on Monday, September 10, from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m.  Admission is free and is open to the public. The concerts are in the Community Room of the library. and are held on the second Monday of every month

Bernardo/Poway/Rancho Penasquitos area to drive senior neighbors to medical appointments or to the store.  Volunteers receive a weekly list of ride requests and can pick which rides, if any, to give.  Liability insurance and mileage reimbursement are provided.  Call (858) 674-1124 for details.

The San Diego Crochet Guild meets on the fourth Monday of the month at the Weingart Senior Center, on Bowron Road in Poway, at 1 P.M. They have guests at their monthly meetings who demonstrate knitting techniques, as well as “show & tell” for members to display items they have tackled during the month.  They also knit for several charities, such as the Polinsky children's shelter, hats for the babies born at Pomerado hospital, scarves for heart and cancer patients, and wool helmets for the military to wear under their helmets.  They also "dress" teddy bears that are presented to the San Diego police department for children experiencing traumatic events. All levels of expertise are welcome. There will be an entertaining and lively presentation with slides by Caitlin Curry of the Cheetah Conservation in Nambia, Africa. Members and guests are invited at no charge. Remember that Boy Scout Troop 680 in RB is picking up newspapers, magazines, aluminum cans and phone books on the 2nd Saturday of each month (rain or shine).
